24/03/2014 · Hi Paul, The documents are mostly searchable and I am able to copy/paste some text out of the pdf. The issue is that for some reason, not everything in the document appears to have been OCR’d completely.
Adobe Acrobat, provided that security is removed and the document itself has renderable text, can edit and save as itself (a PDF) as well. If the document does not have renderable text, then you can redact sections (to remove them from the document) and then use the Typewriter tool to type in new text (which will be renderable text).
29/03/2011 · The purpose of OCR is to take rasterized or bitmapped data from a picture and turn it into renderable (ie: copyable and pastable) text. If it says the text is already renderable, it’s not possible to “force it” to run OCR again.
I didn’t phrase this correctly. I can search the PDF (using ‘find’) but I want to be able to then ‘cut and paste’ from the PDF to use the cuts to make another document.
After the .pdf was created I tried to use Paper Capture to obtain text. I realize that when the pdf is created it includes the text for most of this page but some is not imported into the pdf as text (for instance user to user forums at the top is not recognized as text in the pdf).

In the original document, I could select all of the text with the Text Touch-up tool and I could search none of the text. In the new test document, I can only select a small portion of text with the Text Touch-up tool, however, this portion of text is searchable.

It therefore finds this “renderable text” and thinks there’s nothing else it can do from there. The best bet in that scenario is to save it as a PDF again (print to PDF with cutePDF writer or something of the sort), then do the OCR again on the document.
